MIDNIGHT MOVIE REVIEW: Resident Evil: Retribution

Starring: Milla Jovovich
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Genre: Action
Runtime: 91 minutes

This is already the 5th installment in the Resident Evil movie-series, whereas the videogames have amassed to a total of 6 games. Based upon this fact; there’s a lot of money going around in the Resident Evil series. But is there quality as well?

‘Afterlife’, as the 4th installment was called, ended with a promise. The way it ended, it promised for a big, BIG battle between Alice (Milla Jovovich) and her opponents, Umbrella Corporation. The fifth movie starts off at that exact point, but fails to make do on their promises. Although it is a very beautiful intro, it leaves me wanting for more. Much more.

And that is basically the premise of the entire movie: it needs more. More what? I don’t know. More depth. More character development. More action. More explosions. Either one of those would be a good addition.

Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t a bad movie. It isn’t very good either, but that’s not the point. If you are going to watch a Resident Evil-movie, you aren’t expecting any high-brow philosophical masterpiece. You want action. Though there is a lot of action, it could have been much better. It is mainly the good guys shooting at the bad guys from cover. That isn’t really exciting, especially if you’ve watched the previous movies and know what Alice, and some other guys in the saga, are able to do.

Even though you don’t want to watch a Resident Evil movie for its intelligence, I at least expect some kind of explanation when the zombies suddenly are able to shoot weapons, while driving motorcycles/cars.

It might sound ‘cool’, but without a proper explanation, it looks plain ridiculous.

And that, my friends, is significant for this movie. Don’t ask too many questions, it’ll ruin the movie. You have to see it the way it is; a movie with lots of blood, lots of guns, lots of chicks, lots of zombies and lots of action. If you want to see all that, you’ve come to the right place. Also, if you’ve watched the first four movies (the first was good, the second awful, the third was ‘meh’ and the fourth was okay), this is an absolute must see.
