A closer look at the Superbowl movie trailers (part 1)

Every year, the Superbowl half-time gives us great entertainment. Everybody remembers Justin Timberlake ripping of part of Janet Jackson’s costume, only to reveal a nice boob. Not only is there live entertainment, the adds are magnificent as well. while car manufacturers battle for funniest commercial, movie studios like to impress the audience with their upcoming films. This results in numerous trailers for movies. This year, there were eight new trailers. These eight represent some of the best films that will find a cinematic release this year. I’ll show them, judge them, and give more info on them. This is part 1, where I will preview four of them. Tomorrow will have the other four, I promise!

ACT OF VALOR

Starring: no big, well known actors
Synopsis: “An elite team of Navy SEALs embark on a covert mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent.”

I don’t know how this movie will perform. It’s not a big production like the other movies. It doesn’t feature any big actors, and the director doesn’t have any big-movie-budget experience. I guess they’re taking the ‘The Hurt Locker’-approach. That movie won some oscars, but performed dreadfully in the box office. I guess they’re trying to picture Navy SEALs in a realistic way. In that way, it’s a real American movie. I don’t think this’ll do well in Europe, but it might in the States.

THE AVENGERS

Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, and a lot more.
Synopsis: “Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki & his various membered army.”

After the big succes of Iron Man, director Jon Favreau spoke of his ambition to make an Avengers-movie. His wish was granted. Since then, we have seen introductions for the different characters of the Avengers-squadron. There’s Thor, Captain America, and of course Iron Man 2. These movies all end with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) approaching the superhero in question. I’m really starting to look forward to this movie. With all these big actors, the huge budget, even if the story is meager, there’s at least a ton of action. I’m sure I’ll go to the cinema to watch this one.

BATTLESHIP

Starring: Liam Neeson, Rihanna (lolwut?!)
Synopsis: “A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.”

This movie actually bought the movierights to the board game ‘Battleship’. When I read that, two years ago, It was hard to imagine what the hell the producers where trying to do. But ofcourse, when you know Michael Bay is on board, nothing is too ridiculous. After raping my eyes with Transformers 1, 2 and 3 (visual: good, story: dreadful), Battleship is going to be full of massive robots destroying things. Wow, Michael, how original!

THE DICTATOR

Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Megan Fox, BJ Novak
Synopsis: “The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.”

The only comedy among the trailers. After ‘Brüno’, I temporarily lost faith in Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G, Borat), but after seeing this trailer, I think he will pull this off really well. I don’t know what Megan Fox is doing in this movie though. I thought the only thing she could do is shut up and be pretty. With the inclusion of Anna Faris (Scary Movie’s) and BJ Novak (The Office US), there are some great comedic actors in the cast to even out Megan Fox. I guess I’m going to see this movie, if only to figure out what the hell Megan Fox is actually doing in this film.
