Movie Review: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

After Batman Begins, superhero movies were booming again. Because Marvell couldn’t stay behind to DC-comics, a barrage of semi-known Marvell heroes was fired at the audience. Ghost Rider was one of those. But it was horrible. It failed to do anything, from capturing the essence of the comic to capturing the attention of the audience. Now, Ghost Rider returns for another shot at movie fame, with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Was it any better? Hell no.

The movie starts off with a firefight somewhere in Eastern Europe. You don’t really know why, that’ll be meagerly explained later. All you know is, there’s the bad guys, there’s the good guys, and the good guys lose. So, the good guys call in the help from Johnny Blaze, the alias of Ghost Rider. He’s been struggling with his new identity of flaming skeleton, and he wants to get rid of it. He gets an offer to help the good guys, and they will lift his curse in return.

The movie is full of badly executed clichés. Nicholas Cage is as bad an actor in this film as always. The only movie from the last decade with him in it which was actually good, was KickAss. But he died a horrible death in that movie, so maybe that’s why I think it’s such a great film. Anyway, I got estranged while watching Nic trying to act. I was wondering what the hell I was looking at. This movie is such a trainwreck.

Where there any positives to this film? Well, the soundtrack is quite good. There where some short action sequences which featured some really good songs. Was it enough? Not by a long shot. It made me want to close my eyes and just listen to the music, in stead of watching the film.

To say I had high hopes for this film, I would be wrong. I knew how bad and inconsistent the first film was, and I thought it could only get better. It didn’t. Eva Mendes, the protagonists’ love interest from the first film, is traded in for Violante Placido, some Italian actress. They casted her for her good looks, I’m sure, because her acting wasn’t much better than Nic Cage’s. The only actor performing reasonably, is Ciarán Hinds, but he fails to make a big impact on the film because of the script.

To conclude, stay away from this film. It’s not good for you. It isn’t worth your time.
