Current facts about ‘Assetto Corsa 2’

  1. Second version of Assetto Corsa
  2. Expected release date: 2024

There are two things we really know. One is that Kunos’ next game is a follow-up to Assetto Corsa (not Assetto Corsa Competizione). Even the name is not set in stone, but due to brand recognition it is most likely that Digital Bros and Kunos will not drop the Assetto Corsa name. A source for this can be found in Digital Bros’ 2020/2021 Q3 financial reports from May 2021:

The on-going investments will take the group to incremental levels of revenues. In the next years, numerous new titles will be launched including the second version of the best-selling Assetto Corsa and several other IPs yet to be disclosed.

The second fact about the new game is a target release in 2024, which can be found in the same document. However, this is a target release date, and it might get delayed to 2025.

Assumptions about ‘Assetto Corsa 2’

The assumptions seem likely, but have not been confirmed yet. Unless we have direct confirmation proving the opposite, we can for now assume these hypotheses to be true.

  1. An early access phase before the 2024 release seems very likely
  2. There will be console versions of Assetto Corsa 2
  3. Assetto Corsa 2 is another simulation racing game
  4. Assetto Corsa 2 will have mod support

Assetto Corsa 1 had a long early access phase. It was released on Steam’s Early Access platform November 8th 2013, and had a full release on December 19th, 2014. Assetto Corsa Competizione followed a similar path, with an Early Access release on September 12th 2018 and a subsequent full release on May 29th 2019. Based on prior experience and the (relative) success of both games it is likely that Assetto Corsa 2 will follow a similar blueprint.

Similarly, we can derive that AC2 will most likely have console ports of the game. Assetto Corsa had a PS4 and Xbox One release on June 3rd 2016, while Assetto Corsa Competizione had a Playstation 4 and Xbox One release on June 23rd 2020 – both more than a year after the PC release. AC2 will most likely have a PS5 and Xbox release as well, albeit with a significant delay.

The third assumption is that AC2 is another deep simulation racing game, like AC1 and ACC. At first glance, this seems a shoe-in. However, as we’ve seen with Project Cars 3 which went for a more casual take on racing as opposed to its predecessors, we cannot take this as fact yet. But, knowing the passion the guys at Kunos have for simulations, we can be fairly certain that their next game will be one too.

Assetto Corsa 1 is famous for its modability. Due to the licensing with SRO, this modability did not carry over to Assetto Corsa Competizione. The mod support for AC is one of the key reasons why AC is still going strong 7 years after its full release and will probably keep going well into 2024. In order to convince people to make the step to AC2, I believe it is essential to offer at least the same level of mod support as AC1 for the game to succeed.

Racedepartment holds 17K+ mods for AC1 as of Q3 2021

Things that remain unclear about Assetto Corsa 2

Now lets talk about stuff that remains unclear – which is basically everything. Even the assumptions above are not clear, yet there are other big question marks left unanswered. For instance: will they continue working with Unreal Engine like they did with ACC, or will they build their own engine like they did for NetKar which was later adapted for AC1?

The amount of stuff that is still unknown about AC1 is too big to address specifically. For now, if you want to know “will AC2 be X or Y”, the answer is “we (the public) don’t know”.

When will we know more about Assetto Corsa 2?

505 games’ parent company Digital Bros S.p.A. posts quarterly results. This means that every 3 months, they need to provide a (financial) update to their investors. In these updates we find hints towards their upcoming projects, suchs as AC2.

Digital Bros’ financial year runs from July 1st until June 30th, which means their next financial update will be a end-of-year report. Last year this end-of-year report was published in October. I assume we will get a bit more info when said report drops, unless they spill the beans in an interview before that!
