Ford GT40 ’66 Tribute (1966 Le Mans) || Ford Mustang GT3 Custom Livery

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Ford’s famous Le Mans 24h victory over Ferrari. You know the one. The one in which Ford was finally able to beat Ferrari after years of trying. The American powerhouse, the megacorporation, had to hire Carol Shelby in order to create a second generation of the car.

It is this second generation that would go on to dominate endurance racing for the next 5 or so years. Despite Ford being one of the biggest car companies in the world at the time, Hollywood still found a way to turn this into an endearing underdog story about the guy who would end up finishing second in this very race: the 24 heures du Mans of 1966.

The winners? Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren. Yes, that Bruce McLaren.

Their car was a black GT40 with silver-coloured striping. A fairly minimalist design, which was standard at the time. A time in which sponsorships did not yet exist. It did have a white fern behind the front wheels, as a symbol for New Zealand from which both drivers originated.

While Ford is not paying any tribute to their first Le Mans victory 60 years de facto, I figured I would do it in their stead. So I took it upon myself to create a livery for the Ford Mustang GT3 which would pay a tasteful homage to the number 2 car. I added minimal Ford branding to the rear wing, hood, and front bumper. As well as the names of the drivers in a slightly larger than regular font size.
