Luc Alphand Aventures || Ferrari 296 GT3 Custom Livery

Watch the YouTube-video introduction!

If you love racing, and cars in general, you might be subscribed to a few car-related Youtube channels. Channels like Top Gear, Drivetribe, Doug DeMuro, or maybe Hagerty. On the latter channel, I encountered a video that really piqued my interest. A jump back in time to my early teens, when Schumacher dominated Formula 1 in Ferrari. But also when the best-performing Ferrari GTs weren’t built by Ferrari themselves.

A little history lesson: Ferrari’s 550 Maranello was converted to a GT racer by a small Italian company, but the results were lacklustre. Enter Frenchman Frederic Dor, who sent his off 550 to Dave Richards. Like a true Carol Shelby, Richards put his Prodrive company to work and created what became to be known as the 550 GTS.

The 550 GTS did what Ferrari and the Italians couldn’t. It won. A lot. It even won in its GTS class in the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans, at the hands of Peter Kox, Tomas Enge and Jamie Davies.

In the shadow of the much more professional Prodrive-run team, Frederic Dor had assembled a privateer entry with former skier Luc Alphand and Jerome Policand (nowadays team boss at GT World Challenge team Akkodis ASP). They finished a humble 5th in class, out of 10 entries.

Despite this run-of-the-mill result, this is the car that featured in the Hagerty video I mentioned earlier. And I must say: I understand why. The Luc Alphand Aventures team features a striking livery, with bright blue above a snowy-white stripe featuring snowy peaks, on top of a metallic grey. A livery which I immediately wanted to replicate, and so I did. But not for the 550 Maranello, no, for the Ferrari 296 GT3 in Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC).
