Richard Lloyd Racing ‘Canon’ (1984) || Porsche 992 GT3 R Custom Livery

Watch the YouTube-video introduction!

When I was making the Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo livery, I was doing some research looking for info and pictures to base my design on. I came across a website I might not have visited in over a decade; Racing Sports Cars (RSC). This website offers loads of galleries from racing photographers dating back to at least the 70s.

Browsing through the entrants for the races the Nissan would have entered, I came across a striking livery for the Porsche 956 from Richard Lloyd Racing, which I have simply dubbed “that Canon livery”. Why I named it that will probably be immediately clear to you.

Richard Lloyd Racing was a privateer team headed by, perhaps unsurprisingly, Richard Lloyd. After entering the Porsche 956 in the World Sportscar Championship (Group C) in 1983, Lloyd decided it wasn’t good enough and had the chassis and monocoque upgraded for more sitfness. This car, which Lloyd dubbed the 956 GTi, would go on to win the Brands Hatch round of the 1984 season by the hands of Jan Lammers and Jonathan Palmer (Jolyon’s dad).

For most of the team’s existence, it would partner with Canon for this striking red and white livery. Including perhaps the team’s best result, a 2nd place in the 1985 24 Hours of Le Mans with Lloyd himself, Jonathan Palmer and James Weaver at the wheel.

Unfortunately for the team, Canon dropped their sponsorship in 1986. The team’s 956 GTi could not keep up with Porsche’s new car, the 962C. In ’87, the team acquired a 962C themselves to moderate success. Unfortunately, the results dropped off and by 1991, the team folded because of a lack of funding. But at least its most recognizable livery lives on!
