Zakspeed Mustang Probe (1986) || Ford Mustang GT3 Custom Livery
When searching the archives for fun liveries to recreate, I was able to uncover a piece of motorsport history that was previously unknown to me. And if I did not know it, chances are that you didn’t either. Unless you are American or over 50.
Back in the 80s, Ford had a racing program for IMSA. Not very surprising so far. But unbeknownst to me, they also created a GTP (GT Prototype) car that was introduced in 1985. It raced along other GTP’s from Porsche, Nissan, Chevrolet, Jaguar and BMW. It was dubbed the Ford Mustang Probe, and it was entered by, among others, German outfit Zakspeed Racing.
The Zakspeed Mustang Probe was entered into the Camel GT championship at the same time Zakspeed was a Formula 1 constructor, hoping to gain Ford backing for their 4-cilinder F1 engine.
The Zakspeed Mustang Probe would use this same engine to some success. But ultimately, they were unable to beat the mighty Porsche 962s. The Mustang Probe faded into relative obscurity, but not without leaving us this banger of a livery. A livery which I’ve attempted to remake for the Ford Mustang GT3.
